Story
What if there was a church where the unchurched could call home? What if all the church language, traditions, and culture was stripped away and we just were us? What if there was a church that saw people far away from God come close to Him? Why isn’t that in Helotes? Why are young people and young families turning away from God?
These were the questions in the beginning.
In the Fall of 2007, a Core Team of 35 people began making intentional relationships with 1200 unchurched friends. Out of that relational web, Gateway Fellowship Church started having public services on February 10, 2008 at Bob Beard Elementary in Helotes, Texas. By July of 2007, the church had moved to it’s current location, the Silverado 16 Movie Theatre. The move provided a more desirable location, atmosphere, and triple the space needed for ministry.
Lead Pastor John Van Pay has a heart for those who do not know God. No matter the background, checkered past, or faith tradition, one truth remains: everyone matters to God. Gateway will always be a place where it’s okay to not be okay.
Discipleship is an important aspect of the church. Being a new church and approaching an old problem has been liberating. The Leadership Team is able to be organic in the solutions of relational discipleship without being too “programmed”.
