Getting In - Fellowship Teams

These teams are small groups of people in homes, sporting venues, coffee shops and other settings where people come together to pray, play, read the Scriptures, have great conversations, and look for opportunities to serve one another and their community.

1. Interest Teams

Hermana
Every woman deserves a break! Come meet other women every third Monday of the month at choice restaurants then head over to the Santiko's Silverado Movie Theater for a chic flick. If you can only do one, that is cool with us. Bring a friend and have fun.

Sports Team
If you are looking to loose weight or make new friends who also enjoy cycling, mountain biking, running, or even volleyball; there is a group of people you will enjoy participating with. We are always putting rides together during the week and Saturday mornings. If you have a bike, come as you are. No spandex, no shaved legs, no funny shoes, no problem. Our goal is to have fun and no one gets dropped. Our motto is “take one from the road” because we encourage everyone to pick up a piece of trash and help with our adopt-a-highway program on Bandera Road.

Prayer Team
Every Monday at 8:30am, a team meets to pray for our new friends in the community. If praying with others is important to you, please consider joining us.

“Prayer is the best test of an individual, and it is also the best test of a church. A church can be flourishing: She can be successful in terms of organizations, she can be tremendously active and appear to be prosperous, but if you want to know whether she is a real church or not, examine the amount of prayer that takes place.” Lloyd Jones

Recovery Team
If you have recently gone through a divorce or a death of someone close to you, we have a certified counselor and chaplain from the Methodist Hospital who cares for those with these unique needs and is qualified to lead short term teams.

Guy’s Night Out
A few times a year, the guys will go out for a late movie and hit the local taco stand. There will also be opportunities for over night trips too.

At Gateway Fellowship, we value deeper community and believe that the best way to experience authentic relationships is in a fellowship team. We believe the Scriptures teach that the church is not a building or location, but people of God on a mission. We became a church before we had a service and a building. Things like acceptance, accountability, love, care, vulnerability, commitment, authentic friendships, prayer, learning, support and growth all occur in the context of our fellowship teams. They are small groups of 8-14 adults that meet on the best night of the week for the team. This is how we nurture and grow people in Christ. A strong foundation is currently being laid for Fellowship Teams, and as our groups continue to grow and multiply, more teams will become available to join.

Why should I be a part of a Fellowship Team?
You can only grow so far on your own. We miss the joy of doing life and faith when not doing it together. Being on a team will help you develop lasting friendships that will encourage you and provide accountability and care. Teams celebrate wins and are there during crisis moments. You don’t even have to come to Gateway Fellowship on Sundays to be a part. Some people worry that when they come, they won't connect, and then feel obligated. One of our core values is to try something out for a month, if it’s not the right fit, try another team.

What happens during a Fellowship Team gathering?
Its not nearly as intimidating as you think. You arrive and hang out for 20-30 minutes by catching up. There will probably be some snacks to eat. Then you have worship together and listen to relevant Christ-centered worship music. After that, you talk about scripture and the message from Sunday for 30 minutes by asking questions. Coaches make sure the discussion is practical and focused. There are no lectures and stuff you won’t understand. For the last 10 minutes there may be some prayer. It all lasts about an hour and a half, but often people will hang out a little longer.

Is there more to a Fellowship Team than the gathering?
Most of the time is spent with the fellowship team during the designated time. But we envision teams praying for each other, providing meals for unique times, helping each other when there are needs, and hosting showers. Some fellowship teams may also choose to serve together at one of our city volunteer opportunities. We desire to be a church that represents Jesus to our city by caring for people’s needs.

Where do Fellowship Teams meet?
They meet in local neighborhoods in Helotes, San Antonio, and surrounding areas. Some teams rotate homes, others go to the same house every week. You can usually find a team within 5-10 minutes from where you live.

What happens if I have kids?
Kids are a very integral part of Fellowship Teams. Just as the adults need time to fellowship and to grow together, our children do too. The kids join us for worship and then during discussion they have their own lesson given in a very creative and interactive way.

How do I try out a team?
Contact us because there may be a team meeting near you soon. Another way is just to ask a friend if you can go with them to their group. You are welcome at anytime to any of the teams.

Can I start my own team?
There is always a need for new coaches. We would love to get your information and talk with you about starting a team at some point. There are key times in the year when we have leadership training sessions. Individuals or couples who can love and care for people will be interviewed. We envision our coaches doing funerals, baptizing believers, and performing weddings.
